Kwale is mainly an inland district, but it has coastline south of Mombasa. It borders Taita Taveta to the west, Kilifi district to the North West, Mombasa and Indian Ocean to the east and Republic of Tanzania to the south. Kwale district has four major topographical features namely the coastal plain, the Foot Plateau, the Coastal Uplands and The Nyika Plateau. The coastal plain is narrow belt and varies in width from 3km to 20km. The coastal plain lies below 30m above sea level and extends 10kms inland. The extent of this feature, which is the coastline in Kwale District, is about 250km. Kwale is mainly an inland district, but it has coastline south of Mombasa. Diani Beach is part of the Msambweni division. Shimba Hills National Reserve and Mwaluganje elephant sanctuary are other attractions in the district.
